New phenomena and functionalities may emerge from the suitable combination of particulate building units into more complex\, hierarchical soft matter assemblies\, which can go far beyond individual particle properties. Recent advances in synthesis\, self-assembly\, and additive manufacturing techniques have had a tremendous impact in this regard.
