The Smart Medical Devices and Therapies Innovation Cluster is an initiative of leap:up GmbH with the aim of specifically promoting and accelerating the development of smart medical devices and innovative therapies. By expanding its own expertise and resources, the cluster supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Saxony in particular in accessing new technologies, developing innovative solutions and successfully tapping into national and international markets.

As a powerful network, the cluster offers its members a broad portfolio of support services – from the development of R&D projects to competence development and topic-specific consulting to the organisation of versatile networking formats. A particular focus is placed on promoting cooperation between companies in the biotechnology and medical technology sectors and healthcare institutions.

Strategic priorities

Based on the experience gained in the first cluster phase, the innovation cluster is focusing in the current funding phase on particularly promising topics that offer great potential for national and international appeal:

• Cell and gene therapy
• Use of artificial intelligence in the life sciences
• Medical 3D printing / bioprinting
• Digital health
• Diagnostics and analytics

These focus areas reflect Saxony's dynamic development into a leading life science location. The cluster aims to further strengthen and sustainably expand the existing ecosystem of companies, research institutions and medical partners.

Support for SMEs – from idea to market launch

A central concern of the cluster is to strengthen the innovative power of Saxony's SMEs. There is a particular focus on practical support with regulatory challenges – especially in the wake of the stricter requirements imposed by the Medical Device Regulation (MDR). SMEs gain access to tailor-made expertise in all aspects of approval, certification and market access.

In addition, the cluster initiates pilot projects with healthcare providers, health insurance companies and other relevant partners. The aim is not only to accelerate innovation processes, but also to enable economic exploitation through successful placement in the healthcare system. This also includes early technology assessment with regard to possible reimbursement eligibility in the primary healthcare market.

The Smart Medical Devices and Therapies innovation cluster sees itself as a catalyst for forward-looking medical innovations in Saxony – with the clear goal of strengthening the competitiveness of regional companies while contributing to the further development of modern healthcare.
